Transportation Planning, Services, Consultants

Transportation planning, or transport planning, is involved with the evaluation, assessment, and design and sitting of transport facilities (generally streets, highways, bike lanes and public transport lines). Models for planning include rational actor, transit oriented development, incremental planning, organizational process, and political bargaining.
Transportation services and facilities support and fundamentally shape major activity centers, cities, towns, suburbs, and metropolitan regions.
Streets, trails, and open spaces frame the blocks within which structures are built. Traditional, fine-grain, connected networks of arterial, collector, and local streets offer multiple route choices, disburse traffic over multiple streets, and provide more capacity than contemporary, sparse, collector-and-cul-de-sac networks.
We have successfully prepared short-, intermediate-, and long-range transportation master plans for downtowns/central business districts, large land parcels, institutions, cities, towns, and sub-regions. Our clients include private real estate developers, institutions, and public agencies.
We have prepared hundreds of transportation master plans, in more than 30 states, for private real estate developers, public agencies, and institutions.

Services include:

  • Transportation master plans
  • Campus master plans
  • Sustainable transportation planning
  • Corridor Plans
  • Comprehensive/master plans
  • Travel demand forecasts
  • Pedestrian planning
  • Bicycle planning
  • Transit planning
  • Parking studies
  • Parking planning and design
  • Transportation Management (TMP)/Travel Demand Management (TDM) Plans

Parking Consultants

“We provide Parking Lot Designs and planning services to all public and private agencies.”

Parking is the most essential component of urban and suburban transportation system.

Enough parking should be provided to adequately accommodate employee, customer, resident and visitor demand without spilling over into adjacent neighborhoods. Too much parking should be avoided to discourage excessive driving, unnecessary construction and operating costs, and negative environmental impacts.

Parking lots and garages should be designed to be easy to use and economical. Shared parking can reduce peak-parking requirements by as much as 40% urban areas and mixed use suburban projects.
MJWells and Associates, as a Parking Consultants offer following services:

  • Shared Parking Studies
  • Parking Management
  • Data Collection
  • Revenue Control Studies
  • Parking Supply and Demand Studies
  • Parking Garage Design
  • Conceptual Design
  • Parking Variances
  • Valet Parking Plans
  • Access/egress Studies
  • Circulation Studies
  • Signing and Striping Plans
  • Expert Witness Testimony

Transportation Demand Management

Transportation demand Management, Travel Demand Management, Traffic Demand Management all the TDM is and application strategy or set of policies which are applied to reduce travel demand or redistribute this demand in space or in time. It is an art to modify travel behavior to avoid costly expansion of the transportation system.

TDM is a principle that provides everything that is essential in designing transportation and physical infrastructure so that alternatives to driving are naturally encouraged and our systems are better balanced .TDM thus underlies most of the important new initiatives of today. TDM cannot be managed by team of 2-3 people; it requires corporation of many actors who may include developers; landowners; employers; business associations; and municipal, county, regional, and state levels of government.

TDM Measure Box

  •  Including or improving pedestrian-oriented design elements
  •  Including and improving public transportation infrastructure, such as subway entrances, bus stops and routes.
  • Subsidizing transit costs for employees or residents.
  • Bicycle-friendly facilities and environments, including secure bike storage areas and showers.
  • Providing traveler information tools, including intelligent transportation system improvements, mobile and social applications.
  • Flex-time work schedules with employers to reduce congestion at peak times.

Expert Traffic Signal Designs

Traffic signals are designed to make sure safe and systematic flow of traffic. A proper traffic signal design can help in protecting vehicles and pedestrians at busy junction and can also help in reducing the severity and occurrence of accidents between vehicles entering intersections.  MJWells & Associates provides Traffic Signal Design services to all the public and private agencies. Also provides a variety range of traffic signal services to real estate developers.

Advantages of having Traffic Signals Design

·         Increase in roadways and crossroads facility.
·         Allocate right-of-way.
·         Reduces the severity and consistency of certain accident types.
·         Provide a systematic movement of traffic.
·         Make easy useful and well-organized progression of traffic along an arterial street network.
·         Interrupt heavy traffics at certain amount of intervals to allow vehicles and pedestrian traffic to cross the road.

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING AND SERVICES

Traffic engineering is a phase of engineering that uses techniques to attain the secure, efficient and convenient movement of people and goods on roadways. It deals with the following terms to achieve the goals: geometry of road, sidewalks and crosswalks, designing and operating traffic signal modes, planning, terminals, connection of streets and highways and their corresponding networks.  Traffic engineering deals with the functional working of transportation.

Traffic engineering projects also includes designing of traffic control devices and their modification, including traffic signals and signs.  Engineers, also considerate traffic safety by investigating the locations individually with the crash rates. Then, they develop some countermeasures according to the location and helps in reducing the crash.  Traffic management is done by two ways; they are short term and long term. Short term management mainly focuses on preparation of traffic control plans, which also includes detour plans for pedestrian and vehicular traffics. Long-term pays attention on estimating the impacts of commercial developments on traffic patterns.  Dynamic elements such as sensors for the measurements of traffic flow, inter-connectivity, traffic management guidance system etc are being introduced into traffic management.

Traffic flow and speed sensors are also used in order to detect problem and alert the operators, so that the cause of congestion can be determined and measures can be taken accordingly to minimize the problem. One of its best features is introduction of traffic cameras and message signs.  These systems collectively are called as Intelligent Transportation System.

Traffic Engineering Services:

  • Field Data Collection
  • Transportation Planning
  • Sustainable Transportation Planning
  • Transportation Master Plans
  • Campus Master Plans
  • Site Traffic Assessments
  • Traffic Impact Studies
  • Site Assess Studies
  • Site Circulation Studies
  • Traffic Calming Studies
  • Interchange Justification Studies
  • Intersection Design Studies
  • Interchange Design Studies
  • Roundabout Design Studies
  • Parking Facility Design Studies
  • Parking Management Studies
  • Transit Planning
  • Transportation Management Plans
  • Geometric Design of Streets, Alleys, and Driveways

  • Micro-Simulation Studies
  • Link, Intersection, Interchange, and Freeway Capacity Analyses
  • Queuing Studies
  • Traffic Signal Warrant Studies
  • Traffic Signal Design
  • Signing and Pavement Marking Plans
  • Traffic Control Plans
With the introduction of traffic engineering and its services, the amount of accidents, congestion, crashes are reported less as compare to the previous era. Also the introduction of ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) has helped a lot in controlling and monitoring the traffic. Besides these, the management of the public roads and neighborhood has also become very easy to handle.

Traffic signal designs & Control Plan

Traffic signal management involves the planning, design, maintenance, and proactive operation of a traffic signal system. It helps to improve the efficiency, safety and reliability of signalized intersections.

Traffic signal designs typically should include the following:
Location of poles, signal heads, and controllers
    Phasing diagram/timing chart
    Cable and conduit runs
    Specifications and standards
Loop wire and video vehicle detector systems read more

Advantages of Traffic signals and signal systems:

  • It assigns right-of-way
  • It helps to increase capacity of intersection & roadway
  • Accident frequency and severity reduces
  • Facilitate effective and efficient progression of traffic along an arterial street network
  • Make pedestrian traffic easy to cross

Mjwells offer a full range of traffic engineering services to public agencies, private real estate developers, and others.
