Traffic engineering is a phase of engineering that uses
techniques to attain the secure, efficient and convenient movement of people
and goods on roadways. It deals with the following terms to achieve the goals:
geometry of road, sidewalks and crosswalks, designing and operating traffic
signal modes, planning, terminals, connection of streets and highways and their
corresponding networks. Traffic
engineering deals with the functional working of transportation.
Traffic engineering projects also includes designing of
traffic control devices and their modification, including traffic signals and
signs. Engineers, also considerate
traffic safety by investigating the locations individually with the crash
rates. Then, they develop some countermeasures according to the location and
helps in reducing the crash. Traffic
management is done by two ways; they are short term and long term. Short term
management mainly focuses on preparation of traffic control plans, which also
includes detour plans for pedestrian and vehicular traffics. Long-term pays
attention on estimating the impacts of commercial developments on traffic
patterns. Dynamic elements such as
sensors for the measurements of traffic flow, inter-connectivity, traffic management
guidance system etc are being introduced into traffic management.
Traffic flow and speed sensors are also used in order to
detect problem and alert the operators, so that the cause of congestion can be
determined and measures can be taken accordingly to minimize the problem. One
of its best features is introduction of traffic cameras and message signs. These systems collectively are called as
Intelligent Transportation System.
